Mount Meru Hiking
The main route for climbing Mount Meru · Momella Route: The only official route to the summit via Saddle Hut and Socialist Peak.
Overview
Mount Meru is a stunning, often overlooked volcano located in northern Tanzania, just 70 kilometers west of Mount Kilimanjaro. Standing at 4,566 meters (14,980 feet), it’s the second-highest mountain in Tanzania and the fifth-highest in Africa.
Although it’s not as famous as Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru offers a unique and unforgettable hiking experience. The mountain is located inside Arusha National Park, which means the trek begins with scenic trails through lush forests, full of wildlife like giraffes, buffaloes, monkeys, and birds. This makes the Meru climb feel like a combination of a hike and a safari.
The trail winds through different vegetation zones—starting in rainforest, then moving through heath, moorland, and eventually reaching alpine desert near the summit. The views are absolutely breathtaking, especially at sunrise from the top, where you can see the glowing peak of Kilimanjaro in the distance.
The climb to Mount Meru’s summit usually takes 3 to 4 days, and it’s considered slightly more challenging in some parts than Kilimanjaro due to its steep ascent. But it’s also a great warm-up climb for those planning to attempt Kilimanjaro later.
One unique feature is the dramatic crater rim that climbers walk along on summit day—it’s rugged, narrow in parts, and thrilling, with the ash cone and crater below. You’ll summit at Socialist Peak, the highest point of Meru.
